You read that correctly. I firmly believe my apartment hunt was weirdly similar to your training software hunt. Here are seven reasons why:
1. We want a home.
Finding a place to live outside of work is comparable to finding a place to live at work. Here’s what I mean—I was looking for a home where I could eat, sleep, watch Netflix, etc., in the same way at work we all crave a place to go that feels like home. When we think of “work,” we often think of a physical office, but it’s more than that. The training software you choose to use on your team is in large part where your employees will “live” at work. Training software is a metaphorical utility closet full of daily essentials, like toilet paper, paper towels, a vacuum cleaner, etc. It equips them to live and work comfortably and efficiently.
2. We start with Google.
My apartment search started the same way your training software hunt did—it started with Google. I went and searched “best places to live in Indianapolis.” You went to Google and typed in “best online learning platforms in 2019.” See the similarities here?
3. We have no shortage of options.
Your Google search likely resulted in a lengthy list of online learning platforms. My Google search resulted in a lengthy list of apartments. And also an extremely organized spreadsheet of the pros, cons, features, and price of each apartment in the same way you likely know your options when it comes to comparing and contrasting online training platforms.
4. We learn the features.
The features within a training software are comparable to apartment features. Most apartments have similar floors, countertops, a washer, and dryer, etc. Most training software has an online course creator, can be an online course builder, and allow you to develop online training courses. So, if every apartment and training software has similar features, how do you pick the best one?
5. We’re mindful of price.
If you’re like me, the answer is price. Maybe you’re stuck searching for a cheap training software because you don’t have unlimited funds in the budget. So, you might be looking for a free online course builder, a place that will sell online courses for free or a live online class platform. But here’s why a free training tool won’t work—it gives you high-level compliance training that probably isn’t suitable with your company objectives or team training. If you need great training for your sales or support team, free software won’t work. The same goes for an apartment search. I would’ve loved to pay less for rent, but I went with my apartment because it was suitable for what I needed. It was close to work, within walking distance of things I enjoy doing, and in a safe area. At the end of the day, while saving money is great, quality over quantity is way more important.
6. We value quality, human interactions.
Customer experience. A leasing agent is equally comparable to the Account Executive you’re chatting with to help you choose the best training software. This was what enabled me to choose my apartment. The leasing agent at apartment #1 was dull, boring, and robotic. The leasing agent at apartment #2 was rude and hurried. My leasing agent’s name is Charlotte. She was personable, helpful, friendly, and passionate about my apartment community. She played a huge role in my decision to make my apartment my home.
7. We want to do better work so we live better lives.
Love and passion for the apartment. As I mentioned above, Charlotte was beyond passionate about my apartment complex. It was clear she was proud to work there. She even used to live in the exact unit that I’m moving into, and she showed me pictures of the view from her porch! The same goes for choosing training software. Here’s the thing—training can be viewed in two different ways: it can be viewed as a burden and something an employee dreads, or as a company philosophy that empowers employees to do better work so they can live better lives. The second option is how Lessonly thinks about training. The second option is also comparable to how Charlotte feels about my apartment.
Maybe you’re thinking, “It’s just training, why does it matter so much? Training software is nowhere near as important as where someone lives.” It does matter. Being able to start my new job and not feel overwhelmed with information allowed me to come home at the end of each day happy and excited for the next one. I’ve never wondered where to go to have a question answered because I knew what I needed was stored in Lessonly’s training management system. The ultimate result of having better training was doing better work at my job, and the ultimate result of picking a great place to live is living a better life.
I hope when the time comes for you to search for training software, you think of it like apartment shopping. Find your Charlotte and find your home.
