In middle school, I was a first-round draft for group projects related to English or Algebra. But, they picked me last for dodgeball in gym class. Three years in a row. I was terrible at the game, and my 13-year-old self wasn’t okay with it.
I remember standing on the sidelines, wondering how I could be so deeply awful at dodgeball. But here’s what I see now that I didn’t then—I never did anything to improve my dodgeball skills. I didn’t ask my gym teacher for tips and tricks. I never practiced my aim. I couldn’t learn from the kids who were great at the game because I was too jaded to ask for help. I thought I should perform well and get picked first without ever practicing. Too often, this is how we treat work, too.
