What’s Missing From Your Employee Management Software? Training and Practice.

So what’s missing from your employee management software?

The short answer? Training and practice.

The long answer? It’s best explained with a junior high story.

In middle school, I was a first-round draft for group projects related to English or Algebra. But, they picked me last for dodgeball in gym class. Three years in a row. I was terrible at the game, and my 13-year-old self wasn’t okay with it.

Believe me when I say this was the only thing I knew how to throw.

I remember standing on the sidelines, wondering how I could be so deeply awful at dodgeball. But here’s what I see now that I didn’t then—I never did anything to improve my dodgeball skills. I didn’t ask my gym teacher for tips and tricks. I never practiced my aim. I couldn’t learn from the kids who were great at the game because I was too jaded to ask for help. I thought I should perform well and get picked first without ever practicing. Too often, this is how we treat work, too.

My experience with dodgeball illustrates what it looks like when an HR software or employee management software lacks training and practice tools. Employees should be far better prepared and enabled to do their jobs well. Without the opportunity to train and practice within a performance management system, tracking learning and development outcomes is nearly impossible. And growing a team while still keeping everyone focused and united becomes challenging. Here’s why integrating training with performance management software makes employees feel like they’ve been picked first:

1. Training and practice become completely accessible.

HR management software rarely focuses on training. But when teams have the opportunity to practice their jobs, they stay on the same page. Why? Because people feel included if they’re learning and growing with the people around them. Continual access to training is the best way to maintain this growth, and clarity about what great work looks like becomes inevitable.

Access to training matters because people matter. Team learning and development is vital for success—when employees refine their cold calling techniques, practice chat messaging, or quiz themselves on product knowledge, they become experts at their jobs. Teams win more with continuous performance management software. When employee software is available to all and shares best practices—each teammate is empowered to do their best work. They test these new ideas and strategies using the human resource management system software so when it’s time to sell, support, or provide service for a customer, they know exactly what to do.

2. Teams learn and grow together. No one gets left behind.

We see this in action at Lessonly every month. We put together a monthly enablement lesson to update the whole team on the work that’s been done in the past 30 days. It highlights big decisions, product updates, upcoming launches, new initiatives, and new hires.

While this isn’t “training” in its most traditional form, the monthly lessons teach and unify us in the same way good training in a learning or employee management software does. These monthly updates give us a sense of where we’ve been and where want to go. We get to move the needle forward and make sure what’s being done aligns even more closely with what’s needed. These simple lessons keep us on the same page and help us practice doing better work.

3. People are a team’s most valuable asset. Training puts the “human” in human resource management system.

Most companies use an HR platform like Bamboo HR or Paylocity to manage employee information and performance. But why do we stop there? Work feels transactional when an HRMS doesn’t provide people with opportunities to grow, learn, train, and practice.

When teams practice aspects of their jobs in an LMS or enterprise performance management system, their performance evaluation isn’t reduced down to a quarterly review.  Performance is tracked and managed in real time so employees receive constant feedback.

Employees crave feedback. Everyone wants to understand and be understood in their work and lives, and we believe software is a great way to do just that. To best serve employees, people-centricity is non-negotiable. Teams simply perform better when they practice their jobs and adapt their methods as they go. Putting tools and resources in their hands with training software, paired with an HRMS, gives teams what they need to thrive.

In case you were wondering, I’m marginally better at dodgeball today than I was at 13. I’m no pro, but I know the secret to becoming one—training and practice.
