How to Use a New Employee Checklist

A completed new employee checklist is something to show off to the rest of the HR team or even other departments. “Yo. Check out these sweet activities I planned for the newbies.” You may be excited about your new employee checklist but unsure how to use it. That’s why we’re here. Below you will find five tips for getting started with your new employee checklist:

Review

For the first step, sit down with another manager and walk through what you think the new employees should experience. Make sure you have everything covered, from the tour of the office, the introduction to the rest of the team, and a quick game of two truths and a lie.

Roleplay

You have reviewed it with a manager, but you haven’t walked through the experience. Pull one of your interns aside and walk through the first day activities with them. Don’t take their whole day, do it double time. See what he thinks and get some feedback. Get to the point where you are satisfied walking through your checklist with your new employees. It may not have everything, but it should be a good place to start.

Try it out

The time has come for your new hires to enter the building–the opposite of Elvis. Greet your employees with the confetti and balloons and then get started on first-day activities. Woo! Write down any questions you might have on your template as you are going through so you can see what you missed. If this is your first time, you are going to miss some things. Don’t worry, we’ll get to the point where you answer questions before they can even ask.

Ask for feedback

This is the most important step. If you want to improve upon your new employee checklist for future classes, ask your new employees how you can improve once they have settled in. You may find that one employee just thought it was a free-for-all in the office fridge and has been eating Carol’s lunches since day 1.

Make changes

After you ask for feedback, make the necessary changes. Don’t feel bad about revamping the whole thing. Always strive to keep improving your checklist. It may be a few months before you get one that everyone is happy with. Soon enough, however, someone will come along with a great idea of something to add to the checklist. Never take it personally. Instead, appreciate that your employees care enough for the future classes to give you feedback.
