Performance Appraisal Phrases in a Startup

Performance appraisals are a necessity in a larger company or a corporation, but what about with a small company? Some people may neglect the need for performance appraisal phrases in a startup simply by thinking that their culture enables individuals to be open and honest with each other at all times. That’s great. At Lessonly, we have established a culture of candor where we often give honest feedback in hopes to improve and grow together.

But, regular check-ins can help ensure that everyone is using their time most efficiently and that everyone is striving toward their potential.

When you have a regular check-in with your team on an individual basis, you can remind them how important their role truly is. Meeting with a group you don’t always get that and some startups survive due to long hours by employees. Avoiding burnout means maintaining motivation. Promoting a we’re all in this together High School Musical attitude can keep an employee motivated and working hard.

Every employee on your team might have a different motivational factor, so, meeting and using positive performance appraisal phrases to really emphasize why each employee is there can be helpful.

Efficiency evaluation

With so many tasks, it’s easy to get caught up in doing something that isn’t driving revenue as much as other things. So, use the time in an employee evaluation to also evaluate the efficiency of your employees. I mean that in two ways: what is your employee’s output versus expectations and what are they spending time on that could be better spent elsewhere.

When you use positive performance appraisal phrases, you can simply state that while you appreciate their work in this area you think working on another project as the main focus would be more helpful to the business.

You don’t get the same effect in team meetings as you do in individual ones. Taking the time to meet with each individual regularly gives them better insight into where they need to be instead of just where the team needs to be.

It also can be difficult to motivate and evaluate every employee in a group setting, so when you meet, evaluate on an individual basis instead of just in a group. Your team should know where they are against your goal at all times, but your individuals should also be aware of personalized goals.

Once you start using performance appraisal phrases in your startup, we hope you start to see an increased fostering of an even more cooperative environment. What are some of your favorite positive performance appraisal phrases? Let us know in the comments below.
