Do you remember the scene in Disney’s The Lion King when Mufasa tells Simba, ”You are more than what you have become”?
I vividly remember this moment. There’s just something about it that increases my heart rate and makes me want to get up out of my chair and make things happen. Maybe it’s because I want to believe there is a higher purpose in my life that I was designed to accomplish. Or, maybe it’s because I fear that I’ve set artificial limits on my potential and settled for the status quo. Whatever the reason, this statement resonates with me because it inspires me to become better.
I believe that true leaders intently look for potential in others—and call attention to it. Beyond that, leaders challenge how and where things stand. They push themselves and others to do better work than anyone ever imagined.
A great leader creates—and enables—change.
The truth is, we all need a leader. Whether it be a coach, a teacher, or a colleague we need someone who does three primary things:
Leaders identify potential that others may not realize
While it’s healthy for everyone to have a good dose of humility, self-limiting boundaries are erroneously present. These boundaries create self-doubt and an imaginary ceiling that plagues us from seeing our true potential. The late Zig Ziglar stated, “You cannot consistently perform in a manner which is inconsistent with the way you see yourself.”
There is a direct correlation between how individuals view themselves and how they behave. If someone clearly can’t see their path of full potential, they won’t be able to learn or perform. Instead, we all need a leader who identifies and highlights opportunities for potential.
Leaders believe in others
One of the most compelling components of great leadership is the ability to believe in others. When a leader instills trust and takes the time to get to know their employees, it forges a relationship of mutual respect between them and their team members.
While every employee struggles from time to time, the ability to look beyond these struggles creates a powerful dynamic between leaders and their teams. With a little bit of belief, employees gain the confidence and motivation they need to prove their leader right, while leaders build a self-sufficient and high-performing team.
Leaders challenge and encourage growth
Comfort is the enemy of growth. Unfortunately, it’s easier for teams and employees to stick to their current path or routine simply because it’s comfortable. This is detrimental to personal and business growth.
Ultimately, employees who are challenged and encouraged to grow become comfortable with being uncomfortable. This process may not come naturally, but it’s a vital journey for every successful leader, employee, and team.
