How We Do Better Work with Continuous Training

Repetition is the foundation of human performance. We simply can’t perform at a world-class  level by doing something one time. In reality, inspired performances are built on preparation and experience. 

Think about it, a breakout game isn’t just a single moment. While spectators may see something happen one time, there’s countless hours of practice that happens beforehand.

Big moments in life and at work don’t happen without ongoing training and practice. Here at Lessonly, we live for practice. We write about it, talk about it, and build our product around it. It’s also something we do each and every day. Here are some ways we use ongoing training at Lessonly.


Monthly enablement round-up

At the beginning of each month our enablement team creates a lesson that updates our customer-facing teams on going-ons throughout the company. Here’s an example of the outline we use for each lesson: 

  1. This month’s highlight reel: A brief overview of the main points in the lesson, introductions of new employees, and anything else worthy of the “front page.”
  2. Product Updates—This month: A snapshot of the newest product launch.
  3. Product Updates—Roadmap: A glimpse at our product team’s upcoming projects. 
  4. Team Update: Each month we share noteworthy updates from specific departments. For example, our marketing team highlights upcoming events, campaigns, and more.
  5. Feedback: We always want to hear from our team so we give them the chance to share feedback and ask questions.


AE and CX practice

Our Account Executives and Client Experience teammates have practice sessions that focus on key conversation skills like asking for referrals, driving urgency, and negotiating. These practices sessions include in-person meetings that are paired with online training in Lessonly. Then, our enablement team creates a recap lesson that includes the full meeting recording and meeting notes.

Let’s take a closer look at two of Lessonly’s projects and how our team practices for better work: 


Keys to Quota

One of our Director’s of Sales, Justin Clifford, runs a weekly training session called “Keys to Quota”. During that time, he shares a small fundamental tip that helps our team…you guessed it, hit quota. Each AE takes the lesson ahead of their weekly one-on-one meeting so they can discuss the topic more in-depth with their manager.

Justin had this to say about the Keys to Quota series: 

“Our Account Executives come from very different backgrounds and have different skill sets. We take their unique strengths and share them with the larger team to continue building our foundational sales skills. For us, it keeps us honing our craft and improving intentionally because the speed of our business and life isn’t going to slow down.”


Demoing Value Series

Our CX team is ramping up a new training series that centers around sharing the value of Lessonly. The series includes reviewing team calls, discussing them in-person as a team, and  practicing a scenario that reinforces key skills.These one-off topical lessons give structure and specific goals to our ongoing practice efforts.

Tip: We know that training and practice don’t only happen in Lessonly. Offer a healthy mix of in-person and online training to drive the most retention. Then, keep information stored within Lessonly so teammates can find it right when they need it.


Recurring content

In addition to enablement lessons and practice situations, we also make intentional and recurring updates to other pieces of Lessonly content.

  1. Competitor information—Every company faces competitors and Lessonly is no exception. That’s why we create and update competitor lessons. We also supplement this training info with a dedicated Slack channel for additional conversations.
  2. Weekly product updates—Our product team provides a weekly update of the progress of projects across the organization. This very detailed lesson helps llamas who seek updates on a specific feature or timeline. 
  3. Product enablement—Referenced above, we create in-depth lessons for each product launch including information on messaging, functionality, activation, pricing/packaging, demo accounts, everything the team needs to know.
