How our Favorite Bachelors, Bakers, and Business Owners Could Use a Learning Management System

The inspiration for this blog post came from a 10-second conversation with my manager. Here’s how it went down:

Me: Hey Ben, I’m writing a blog post on learning management systems, and if you pick a random topic, I bet I could incorporate it into the post.

Ben: Oh yes, okay. Concerts. No actually, how about TV characters who’d benefit from a learning management system (LMS) software?

Both of us: ?

Me: Sold.

Buckle up, my friends. This is going to be a wild ride. 

1. Pilot Pete from The Bachelor

Confession time: I don’t ever turn on The Bachelor for my own viewing pleasure, but when my roommates have it on, it sucks me in every time. Do I hate The Bachelor? No. Do I hate myself for not hating The Bachelor? Yes.

I think this season’s bachelor, Peter Weber, needs an LMS login simply for the sake of organization. In the same way frontline customer service and sales reps have tons of information to learn and absorb in the first couple weeks of their jobs, Peter is trying to understand (and fall in love with?) 27 women at once. He really needs a way to efficiently study and keep track of all of these people. With lessons in a learning management system, he can easily go back and review who’s who, update each woman’s lesson as he learns more about them, and educate himself on who exactly he has to pick from so he can make more informed decisions.

2. The Bakers from The Great British Baking Show

On your mark, get set, BAKE! The people on this show, from the contestants to the judges, are beyond talented. They help each other succeed. They also have the best accents. And they do all of this in a tent outside. It’s remarkable.

The contestants from The Great British Baking Show need access to the best learning management system. The bakers could use a learning management system to house their recipes, complete with step-by-step videos, and even quizzes to empower viewers to become better bakers. Perhaps even star bakers. 

3. Tom Haverford from Parks and Rec

None of us really know what Tom actually does for Pawnee’s Department of Parks and Rec. But we do know is that he’s an entrepreneur at heart and has an unending supply of new business ideas like Saltweens: Saltines for tweens, LASIK for fingernails (so you only ever have to cut them once), and a line of toddler cologne with the tagline “Baby, you smell good,” just to name a few. It’s clear that Tom’s passion for Pawnee isn’t quite what Leslie’s is, so it’s no surprise he eventually leaves the P&R team eventually to pursue his dream and open Tom’s Bistro.

Turnover is a normal part of running an organization, but too often it causes headaches for team leads and managers. Having an organized, updated knowledge base keeps teams aligned, informed, and growing together. When everyone has access to the information they need to do their best work, individuals win, teams win, and companies win, too. Perhaps the competition and dysfunction that existed under Michael Scott’s leadership could’ve been mitigated or avoided with thoughtful training as opposed to situational, on-the-job training (like random emergency preparedness tests).

The Bottom Line

Here’s the bottom line—learning helps people do better work, regardless of what that work may be. Whether they’re searching for love, baking delightful creations, dreaming up a business, or selling paper, people will succeed in their endeavors if they’re first equipped with the tools and information they need to make good decisions and master their craft. A great place to start? A learning management system.
