Creating Montage Moments on Your Frontline Team: Why Training Tracking Software Is More Than a Training Record

What’s a training record? A training record is a simple way for companies to track which employees have received what training. Historically, training records have served as a gauge for the skills learned and overall development of each employee, but with training tracking software, monitoring training becomes a whole lot simpler.


There are few things on Earth like a great montage. You know what I’m talking about, right? Rocky Balboa cranking out one arm pushups and racing to the top of the stairs at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Ralph Macchio crushing his opponents in the All Valley Karate Tournament (side note: if you really want to get the full effect of this blog post, head over to Youtube and throw this on in the background. You can thank me later). Don’t forget about my personal favorite—Luke Skywalker swinging through the swamps of Dagobah with Yoda on his back. 

What do these iconic scenes have in common? And what in the world do they have to do with training tracking software? They’re all about progress over time. 

The magic formula behind a great montage is: 

Protagonist x Hard work / Unspecified Amount of Time = Greatness 

Sounds simple enough, right? I’m going to use this blog post to explore some of the ways online training software can be used to create “montage moments” for teams and managers, and where to get started before building out your own training tracker.

Confidence is key

When it comes to frontline teams, confidence is key. These are our Rockys, our Lukes, our Karate Kids—we need to prepare them to be heroes! Sales reps need to understand your value prop and articulate it clearly and quickly, every time. Customer service teams need to know how the latest product update affects clients that might be using special software builds. Since you’re reading this post, I’m going to assume that you already know that a learning management system is an effective way to get this information across, but that’s only half of the picture. 

Teams need to be able to see how they have improved. Too often we get caught up in the day to day grind of our jobs and lose sight of how we could be improving over longer periods of time. Showing a sales rep that they have increased their scores on a product practice scenario is powerful, and leads to them approaching their work with a renewed sense of confidence. You can’t have Luke without Yoda, and you can’t have Karate Kid without Mr. Miyagi. When considering LMS features, we recommend digging into what kind of reporting is available. Case in point, if leaders have the ability to identify specific areas (down to the question!) or topics where teams are underperforming, they can create training to fill those gaps. 

Find your rockstars

Another aspect of tracking training for managers is the ability to find your rockstars. By digging into training scores, it’s easy to identify subject matter experts you can lean on, as well as folks in need of a helping hand. Many of our clients here at Lessonly use assessments to identify top performers, who can then be assigned to triage specific product lines or situations, or partner with new hires to help bring them up to speed. 

We’ve spent some time discussing the ways tracking training can lead to increased confidence for frontline teams and better opportunities for managers to enable teams, but how do you actually do it? Is it as easy as throwing “excel spreadsheet templates for tracking” or “training record template” into a Google search?

At Lessonly, we think that tracking training is a lot more than just asking: “Did they do it?” 

Even a free LMS should be able to provide more information. Some items to consider: 

  • How long did your learners take on a given piece of training?
  • How long did they spend on each individual section? (Were they actually reading or just blazing through?)
  • Are they able to articulate, out loud or even on video, the key points of a specific training?
  • Was the training valuable to the learner?  
  • How often are learners going back to a piece of content as a reference?

A training tool that provides this kind of data is going to help shift training from a mandatory nuisance to something that learners can look to as a long term source of value.
