3 User-Friendly Elements to Consider When Choosing a Training Platform (Hint: Put Your Learners First)

Prior to working for Lessonly, I was working for another software company that was a Lessonly customer, therefore making me an end-user. Fast forward a couple of years, I switched from end-user customer to end-user employee. This has given me a unique perspective on the elements that are necessary when considering a user-friendly training platform, which I’ll share with you below. 

1. An Easy-to-Use User Interface (UI)

So, what are the elements of a user-friendly training platform? The number one element may seem quite obvious: Simply put, the best online training software should have an easy-to-use interface and provide a frictionless experience. If you’ve implemented any type of software before, you know very well that it can be difficult to get buy-in before, during, and even after launch. But choosing training software that is easy to access and has a clean UI will help with ongoing engagement and adoption. When thinking about what “easy-to-use” means, consider the following: 

  • Is it easy to login? Is SSO an option so users don’t need to remember their credentials?
  • Is the interface simple and uncluttered?
  • Is it easy to find training content and navigate throughout the platform? 

These are all questions you’ll want to ask yourself when looking at virtual training platforms.

2. Engaging Elements

Another idea you’ll want to consider is the concept of engaging elements. Inside Lessonly’s lesson builder, we give you—the Creator—the option to add elements to the lesson. We’ve learned working with customers from all around the world, that everyone learns differently. Some people prefer reading, while others are more visual Learners and like to watch videos. In some cases, end-users prefer to engage with the content and click or answer knowledge check questions to test comprehension. What we know is that interactive training software is crucial to have within a learning environment. Having different types of interactive elements to choose from provides a more user-friendly and focused experience for all types of Learners. 

3. Creating Consistency

One interesting element to consider when choosing user-friendly learning and development software is this idea of consistency. This is especially important if you’re going to have many content creators inside the system. You’ve probably used online training tools in the past or experienced some type of instructor-led training (ILT) that included a PowerPoint that was filled with hard-to-read colors, too many images, and complex navigation. It probably wasn’t the best experience, right? Let’s go back to this idea of putting the Learner first. A fairly common question customers ask me is why they don’t have 100% flexibility when it comes to changing font colors, styles, family, etc. when inside the lesson builder (similar to, say, in Microsoft Word). Well, it’s simply because we are considering the Learner-first experience. 

Let’s say, for example, you take a lesson that has bright pink font color and really distracting images or gifs that are not relevant—and a few weeks later, you take another lesson (created by a completely different person) that is really clean, with easy-to-read black font, complementary images, and a clear structure. This is going to be a negative and inconsistent experience, and you’ll be less likely to complete your lesson the next time around—especially if the next one you take has that hard-to-read font. Your expectations will be misaligned, causing you to stop taking the lesson altogether.

One pro tip to take your consistency to the next level: Create lesson templates that can be shared with other creators. Encourage them to rely on those templates (with built-in best practices and structure) when creating new content to avoid an inconsistent experience, and you’ll see boosted engagement and adoption.

Virtual training tools are so important in today’s world, especially since many companies are hybrid or remote due to COVID-19, or are considering going remote long-term after things go back to normal. Regardless of the work environment, choosing the right online employee training platform for your business is an important decision to make and one that should be carefully considered.
