Having a team of employees punching in and out at your place of business each day comes with its inherent advantages. You get to physically oversee each employee, provide them with face-to-face feedback, and communicate with them clearly and directly. On the other hand, maintaining a physical office environment can also be expensive and limits your search for new employees to a specific radius.
By hiring remote employees, you can save money on workplace costs while broadening your potential hiring horizons. As you search for remote job candidates, however, there are some steps you’ll want to take to ensure you make the right choice.
Look for the right characteristics
Not everybody is well suited to work remotely; it takes a very specific type of person to be able to work productively from a home office. Some traits to look for in a promising remote employee include:
- excellent written communication skills
- high levels of self-motivation
- ability to prioritize and organize
Often times, it’ll be easy enough to determine a prospective employee’s communication skills with just a simple follow-up e-mail after you receive their application. If they fail to answer within a few hours or don’t answer at all, this should be seen as a red flag.

Technical skills are also important to have for remote employees in today’s business world. As such, you may want to consider conducting a video conference interview–either as a one-on-one interview or group interview with all prospective employees.
Any viable remote worker should have the equipment and know-how to take part in a video conference interview on any of the popular platforms (Skype, Google Hangouts, etc.). Otherwise, there’s a good chance they won’t have the technical skills to successfully do their jobs.
Put candidates to the test
Finally, consider giving your remote job candidates a small project or task to take on. This can be a group task or something that you have them complete individually. This task could involve anything from figuring out how to contact the CEO of the company, writing a short report on the company’s services/products, or anything else that they’d be expected to do as part of the job.
The best remote employees will get to work on the task right away, showing excitement and eagerness along the way. And, of course, they’ll get the job done right.
